Short answer: most fades look their best for about two weeks. If you want it razor sharp at all times, come in every week to ten days. If you are happy to let it settle and grow a little, three to four weeks is about the limit before the lines start to blur.
The reason comes down to what a fade actually is. It is a blend, from skin or very short at the bottom up to the length on top. Hair grows roughly a centimetre a month, and the lowest, tightest part of that blend is the first to lose its edge. The top can carry on a good while longer than the sides.
The cleaner the fade, the sooner it needs attention.
Skin fade. Taken right down to the skin. Looks incredible fresh, but the bald part regrows fastest. Every one to two weeks to keep it bang on.

Low or mid taper. Left a little longer at the bottom, so it grows out softer. You can stretch this to two or three weeks and still look smart.

Drop or burst fade with length on top. More hair in the mix means more forgiving. Three to four weeks is comfortable.
Thick, fast growing hair needs a more regular trip than fine hair. Fine hair, on the other hand, shows the grow out at the skin sooner because there is less to hide it. If you run a beard line into the fade, a quick tidy every couple of weeks keeps the whole thing looking intentional rather than half grown.
One tip. If you have got something on, come in a day or two before, not the morning of. A fade settles and sits its best after a day.
